HAGERSTOWN, Md. — Drivers in Washington County should expect major delays on Interstate 70 for their Monday morning commute.
Traffic officials with the Maryland Highway Administration say a crash closed both east and westbound lanes of the highway at Interstate 81 (Exit 26). Maryland Department of Transportation cameras show what appears to be a large wind turbine blade stretching across the median, and blocking both eastbound and westbound lanes.
A Maryland State Police spokesperson tells WUSA9 that a tractor-trailer was heading west, hauling the blade, when it came loose and crossed the median into the eastbound lanes. The crash was first reported just after 5 a.m. The spokesperson said no injuries were reported.
Onshore wind turbines can range in average height from 120 to 339 feet, including blades.
Road crews were able to remove the blade from the road by 8:15 a.m. Traffic was moving in the area, but residual delays are possible.
Workers from the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration assisted with road closures through the morning.
